I was watching some of the news with a friend (the only time I ever see TV is when I am visiting people) and there was a story on some new type of robots being developed to assist people suffer physical and other impairments, some AI features to enhance interactivity, one model to interpret hand gestures.
And at the end we get a comparison to those evil robots trying to destroy humanity in the movies and how these are nothing like that, ummmmmmmm in those movies the robots were designed to assist and make life easier for people they weren't designed to destroy humanity, and the scientists are showing the same naivete as their fictional counterparts.
Yet another example of ingenuity that fails to take into account repercussions, automation and a built in capacity to learn gives freedom for a unit to start to think for itself and reconfigure its programming. We can draw parallels to various creation and fall myths, the biblical one and its offshoots being the main one in mind here, to see how it is possible to depart from a created design and purpose.
How many years following the development of this type of technology and others will we see a Terminator type scenario?
